Swimming Pool Zoning Information

Swimming Pools in the City of Shelby are governed by Chapter 1482.

For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   (a)   “Permanent residential swimming pool.” An artificial body of water, permanently installed, used or intended to be used solely by the owner or lessee thereof and his or her family and by friends invited to use it without payment of any fee.
   (b)   “Pool.” An excavation, depression, construction, receptacle or container designed or constructed to hold or retain water, having a minimum size of 200 square feet and being over 24 inches deep at any point.
A zoning permit from the City of Shelby and a building permit from the Richland County Building Department will be required for a pool meeting the above definitions.
The pool shall be located behind the front building setback line and at least 5 feet off the side and rear lot lines.
