Christina Drain, chair, presented the Shelby Historic Preservation annual report to city council Feb. 7, 2022. The report had been previously been emailed to city council members on Jan. 28. Following is a recap provided at the meeting. The entire report can be read here: SHPC annual report 2021
Goals 2021– education and communication for historic business owners and community
- Window signs
- Established a blog – keep owners and community updated on preservation matters
- Several commission members attended the Building Doctor clinic and are pursuing hosting a clinic in Shelby this year.
- Also became members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Participated in the national online conference.
Approved 7 certificates of appropriateness. Working with the 8th property owner to resubmit a COA if he chooses. The number is more than we have reviewed combined since the HPC was formed. Shows a willingness to make improvements to their property and to understand the procedures needed to move forward.
Placed 28 properties that make up the Shelby Center Historic District on the locally designated historic landmarks list. Also placed, Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, the Oakland Mausoleum, The Shelby Mutual Building and Shelby Pure Milk Company Barn on the list.
